Is your camera no longer responding, are you unable to log in or have you forgotten your password? It may then be necessary to reset a Hikvision camera. A reset returns the camera to factory settings so that you can set it up again.
Many people think this is complicated, but in practice it is often not so bad. Most Hikvision IP cameras have a physical reset button that allows you to reset the camera within a few seconds. In this guide we explain step by step how to reset a Hikvision camera, why a camera sometimes does not respond and what about the default password.
Do you use Hikvision cameras or do you want to install a new system? Then take a look at our range Hikvision IP camera surveillance.
There are several situations where a reset may be necessary.
The most common reasons are:
you forgot the camera password
the camera no longer responds in the network
the camera can no longer be added to the recorder
the camera is second-hand and is still on old settings
you want to reconfigure the camera
A reset will restore all settings to factory settings. You can then reinstall the camera.
The most common way to reset a Hikvision camera is via the physical reset button.
The camera must be turned on during the reset. This can be done via:
PoE (Power over Ethernet)
12V power adapter
Most Hikvision IP cameras have a reset button:
under a cover near the SD card
inside the camera housing
sometimes under a small rubber cap
The button is small and usually has to be pressed with a paper clip or pin.
Press and hold the reset button for about 10 to 20 seconds while the camera is on.
Release the button once the camera restarts. You often see that:
the IR LEDs light up briefly
the indicator light changes
the camera reconnects to the network
The camera will then be reset to factory settings.
In addition to a physical reset, there are also software ways to restore a Hikvision camera.
Hikvision has a program called SADP Tool. This allows you to detect and manage cameras on the network.
If you have forgotten the password, you can generate a reset file using this tool. This file is then used to recover the password.
This process is often used by installers or when the reset button is not accessible.
When the camera is connected to a Hikvision recorder, you can sometimes perform a reset via the recorder settings.
In the recorder's menu you can select the camera and reconfigure it or delete it and add it again.
When a camera does not respond, it does not always mean there is a defect. Often it is due to the network configuration or settings.
Common causes include:
a wrong IP address
network conflicts
an incorrect password
problems with PoE power supply
firmware issues
By resetting the camera you can often start the installation again and these problems will disappear.
After a reset, the camera must be reset.
You usually go through these steps:
Connect camera to the network
Search for a camera via the Hikvision SADP Tool
Set new password
Add camera to the recorder (NVR)
Check camera images
The camera will then work as intended again.
