Do you want to connect a security camera, recorder or other device to your network in a stable manner? Then you need a good network cable. You may see terms like UTP, Ethernet or Cat6 and think: what does that all mean? We understand that very well.

What is a network cable?
Simply put, a network cable is the cable that connects your devices via the internet or a local network. Consider:

An IP camera to a recorder (NVR)

A computer to your modem
You will see a familiar plug on both sides: the RJ45 connector. That is that transparent plug that you hear “click” when you connect it.
That sounds technical, but in practice it is very simple. Plug in, click – and you're connected.
What is the best network cable for home?
For most homes and small businesses, a Cat6 UTP network cable is the best choice.

Do you use the cable for camera security with PoE (Power over Ethernet)? Then a good quality cable is extra important. Both power and data run through the same cable.
In 95% of situations we simply recommend a good Cat6 UTP cable. This means you are safe for now and the future.
What is the difference between an Ethernet cable and a network cable?
Actually there is no difference.
An Ethernet cable is simply the technical name for a network cable. Ethernet is the system through which devices within a network communicate with each other.
So:

Ethernet cable = technical name

In practice we mean the same thing
So you don't have to worry about that.
What is the difference between UTP, network and ethernet cable?
Good question, because confusion often arises here.

Network cable = common name

Ethernet cable = same cable, different name

UTP cable = type of network cable without additional shielding
UTP stands for Unshielded Twisted Pair. This means that the copper cores in the cable are twisted together to reduce interference, but without additional metal shielding.
For home use and standard camera security, UTP is usually more than sufficient.
There are also shielded variants (such as STP), but they are mainly needed in environments with a lot of electrical interference, for example in factories.
What length of network cable do you need?

Our advice? Better to take something too long than too short. A cable that is taut is more vulnerable.
In a house where the recorder hangs in the meter cupboard and the camera is outside on the facade, you often quickly reach 15 to 25 meters.

How do you connect a network cable?
Connecting is easier than many people think.

Plug one side of the cable into your router, switch or recorder.

Plug the other end into your camera, computer or other device.

You will hear a clear click.
Do you use PoE for an IP camera? Then you no longer need a separate power adapter. The network cable provides both power and data.
This makes installation clear and neat.

A stable cable means stable image. No glitches, no dropping connection.
Think of a business premises where multiple cameras are continuously recording. Then you simply want it to always work. You can prevent many problems with a high-quality network cable.
Practical example
Suppose you want to install an outdoor IP camera on the rear facade of your home. The recorder is in the meter cupboard.
The distance? About 18 meters.
Then we recommend a 20 meter Cat6 UTP cable with PoE support. This way you have sufficient length and a reliable connection.
That may sound technical, but once everything is connected it just works.
