PoE adapter

Do you want to install an IP camera, video doorbell or other network device without a separate power cable? Then a PoE adapter is a smart solution. With Power over Ethernet (PoE) you send both data and power via one network cable. This makes installations simpler, clearer and often more reliable.

PoE is widely used, especially in camera security. You don't need a socket near the camera, because the power runs via the network cable. This saves on cabling and makes the installation a lot neater. Below we explain what exactly a PoE adapter does, when you use it and what you should pay attention to.

What is a PoE adapter?

A PoE adapter (also called a PoE injector) is a device that adds power to a network cable. This allows a network device to receive both internet data and power via the same cable.

Normally a device needs two cables:

  • a network cable for data

  • a power adapter for power supply

With PoE you combine these two functions in one cable.

A PoE adapter is often used with devices such as:

  • IP cameras

  • video doorbells

  • access points

  • network equipment

The adapter is usually placed between your network device and the network cable. It then sends power via the cable to the connected device.

What is a PoE adapter used for?

PoE adapters are mainly used in installations where it is difficult to install a separate power supply.

For example:

Camera security
IP cameras are often mounted high on a facade or ceiling. With PoE there is no need for a power socket.

Video doorbells
A smart doorbell can receive both power and network via one network cable.

Access points
WiFi access points in an office or industrial hall can easily be powered via a network cable.

Network installations
Other network devices can also be connected with PoE.

Because you need fewer cables, the installation is often clearer and faster.

PoE injectors and PoE extenders

In addition to standard PoE adapters, there are also other PoE solutions.

PoE injector

A PoE injector adds power to an existing network cable. This is useful if your router or switch itself does not support PoE.

PoE extender

A PoE extender extends the range of a PoE signal. This allows you, for example, to connect multiple devices to one cable or bridge longer distances.

This is often used for larger camera installations.

Does PoE need WiFi?

No, PoE does not require WiFi.

PoE works entirely via a network cable (Ethernet). The power and data are both sent via this cable. This makes the connection more stable than a wireless connection.

WiFi can be part of the network, but PoE itself always uses a wired connection.

Do all Ethernet cables allow PoE?

In principle, most Ethernet cables can support PoE, but there are a few conditions.

Important factors are:

  • the quality of the cable

  • the type of cable (e.g. CAT5e, CAT6 or higher)

  • the length of the cable

CAT5e or CAT6 network cable is usually used for camera security. These cables support PoE well and offer sufficient speed for video images.

Longer distances or devices with higher power consumption may require a higher cable category or special PoE equipment.

Which PoE adapter do I need?

The right PoE adapter depends on the device you want to connect.

Important points to pay attention to are:

Power (Watt)

Some devices require more power than others. Standard PoE usually delivers around 15 watts, while PoE+ or Hi-PoE can deliver more power.

Compatibility

Many devices work according to the IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at PoE standard. It is important that the adapter supports this standard.

Application

For a standard IP camera, a simple PoE adapter is often sufficient. For heavier equipment, such as PTZ cameras, a more powerful PoE injector may be required.
